Lower Back Pain? What’s The Cause? How Do You Get Rid of It Sacramento?

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

Lower back pain is the most common spinal complaint voiced by our Sacramento patients. There are many different reasons that patients experience this type of discomfort. Let’s have a look at some of the most common causes of lower back pain and steps for getting rid of it in Sacramento.

Three areas that we look at closely in evaluating lower back pain in our Sacramento patients are:

First and foremost, spinal disc injuries can cause lower back pain. Although disc injuries can cause severe and immediate symptoms; spinal disc injuries are usually an evolving process that take place over months or years. Degenerating spinal discs can also cause chronic soreness. Poor posture, being out of shape, poor ergonomics and being overweight can all contribute to the development of back pain and/or spinal disc injuries.

Few of our Sacramento area patients know what a lumbar facet joint is, but many are suffering from lower back pain that is caused by facet joint dysfunction in their spine. Facet joints are small joints that connect two spinal segments together. There are two joints at each connection level (left and right) and they are located in the rear portion of the spine. These delicate joints can become pinched together (imbricated) and produce severe nagging back complaints. Often facet joint problems can mimic disc pain in severity and can also radiate symptoms into the legs.

Sacroiliac joints are the joints that connect the bones of the pelvic ring together (left ilium, right ilium and sacrum). Dysfunction of the sacroliac joints can also cause lower back pain. Sacroiliac joints can be injured during pregnancy and often cause back pain after birth as well. Sacroiliac joints are also affected by a leg that is shorter on one side, causing alterations in the normal gait pattern that produce back complaints.

How do you get rid of low back pain in Sacramento? Clearly, one must first figure out what are of the spine is causing the problem (disc, facet joint, sacroiliac joints, etc). A chiropractor is a spinal specialist that is specifically trained to carefully evaluate the spine. Start with a chiropractic evaluation and care. Chiropractic has been found to be more effective in the care of neck and lower back pain. If you are in the Sacramento, CA area, call Sacramento chiropractor Dr. Jeri Anderson at 916-368-1600.

Freedom Chiropractic Style!

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

Freedom is a very powerful word. Freedom is the ability to exercise choice. Freedom is also the capacity to engage in certain actions without interference. The concept and principles of freedom are enormous; countries have been founded on it, societies run by it and wars have been fought over it. Chiropractic care shares many similarities with the definitions that are mentioned above because it offers freedom for people who choose to use it.

Most people think of chiropractic care as a natural treatment of an ache or an injury, the freedom from pain. This can be valuable to the person suffering from discomfort. It allows them to resume their normal activities, return to work or sleep through the night. They can do their housework, earn the money they need to support their family or have energy throughout their day. When the pain is no longer there, normal routines return.

People who chose regular chiropractic care enjoy freedom of movement. Their spines and nervous systems become stronger over time. This allows them the opportunity to use their body as it was designed. This means that many people can do things they haven’t been able to do. Grandparents are able to pick up their grandchildren; people can ski for a whole day or complete a full round of golf. As the movement returns to the body, their quality of life improves.

When health returns to the spine and nervous system, other people enjoy freedom from medications. For some, they no longer have to take antacids to relieve ulcer discomfort. Others can cut back on blood pressure pills, or they no longer need them. The overall health of the individual improves. The body is able to use what it already has on the inside. It doesn’t need chemical help from the outside.

The most powerful aspect of lifetime chiropractic care is the freedom from fear. This is the knowledge that your body is capable of standing up to what challenges the environment may throw at you. You know that you have the best doctor in the world working inside of you. You can rely only on yourself for health. When the media talks about the latest virus being reported in your area, rather than feeling threatened, you resolve to keep your immune system primed with good nutrition, restful sleep, regular exercise, reducing and purging the stress in your life and receiving regular chiropractic tune-ups.

Regular chiropractic care offers many benefits to those who choose to use it. Less pain, more mobility, a stronger immune system and a higher quality of life, just to mention a few. That’s Freedom – Chiropractic Style.

How We Help Neck Pain In Sacramento

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

Neck pain is a frequent complaint of patients contacting our Sacramento chiropractic office for help. Sacramento chiropractor, Dr. Jeri Anderson comments: “I’ve helped quite a few patients with neck pain over the past 20 year; but sadly, I would have to say that the rate of neck pain in our Sacramento community has gone up, not down.”

Why? You might ask? The number one culprit is likely the increased use of computers, video games, PDAs and cell phones which can allow people to crane their necks into awkward positions for hours on end. “Teaching patients about proper ergonomics is a key part of their care”, according to Dr. Jeri.

In order to help a patient with neck pain effectively, Dr. Jeri has identified several areas that must be addressed:

  • Listen to the patient and carefully examine the neck to find out what is causing the pain in the first place. Little hinges swing big doors. In other words, rather than broadly masking neck pain with drugs, medications or injections, find out exactly where to problem lies and address the fundamental issue.

Often joints in the neck will be locked up or restricted, causing pain, inflammation, stiffness and a lack of mobility. Because the spine works as a functional whole, these restricted areas of the neck can cause other areas of the spine to overwork, leading to more pain and further problems.

Lack of mobility in the neck can cause the spinal discs to begin wearing out prematurely, producing degenerative disc disease, degenerative joint disease or osteoarthritis (arthritis of the spine).

Additionally, the nerves exiting the neck can become inflamed causing pain, weakness, numbness, tingling and muscle spasms.

  • Chiropractic is a safe and gentle way to correct the underlying, fundamental problems that are causing neck pain. It just makes sense to correct the cause of neck pain, rather than masking the problem with medications and allowing the underlying issues to continue to breakdown the spine.

Often, years of bad habits have created problems in the neck slowly and without much notice. In our Sacramento health solutions practice we recognize that few patients have ever been taught anything useful about preventing neck pain and neck injuries in the first place.

  • Education and exercises are a huge part of preventing future neck pain. For our Sacramento area patients that are interested in learning, we teach them how to take care of their spines on a day in and day out basis through a simple, one-time class that we call Spinal University. These are powerful tools to stop the cycle of neck pain.

Sacramento Chiropractor Asks What’s Causing Your Hip Pain?

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Hip pain can be caused by a variety of conditions and is a very perplexing problem for many patients. The question that Sacramento chiropractor, Dr. Jeri Anderson often asks is “Do you know what’s causing your hip pain?” Most of our Sacramento area patients do not. That’s O.K., that’s why they are at our chiropractic office in the first place!

The most important detail in eliminating hip pain is finding out where the pain is coming from. Chiropractor, Dr. Jeri uses a variety of tools to help determine what is causing your problem, such as asking the right questions, performing an examination using orthopedic, neurologic and chiropractic tests, and reviewing x-rays, MRI and CT exams.

Many patients are surprised to hear that often their pain is not coming from their hip joint at all! Many other types of problems can mimic hip pain, such as:

  • Low back pain can refer pain to the hip. Think about how a heart attack refers symptoms to the left arm even though the heart is where the problem lies.
  • Sacroiliac joint problems, which are where the “dimples” in the buttocks are. Many people mistake pain here for hip joint pain.
  • TFL (tensor fasciae latae) problems and ITB (iliotibial band) problems, these are bands of muscle and soft tissue that run down the side of the thigh from the hip.
  • Sciatica or sciatic nerve pain can radiate  down from the spine and refer discomfort to the hip.

Hip joint pain certainly can be caused by hip degeneration. X-rays will often show this easily. Often however, this degeneration refers pain to the knee or causes groin pain instead of pain in the hip itself.

Bursitis of the hip joint can cause pain, but it is important to figure out why the hip bursa is inflamed in the first place. When the pelvis or spine is not functioning in a balanced fashion due to misalignment, or subluxation, too much stress can be placed on the bursa, creating hip bursitis.

As you can see, there are many causes of hip pain. In order to get better, it is important to get to the root of the problem. Contact Sacramento chiropractor, Dr. Jeri Anderson for help at (916) 368-1600.

5 Things You’re Not Supposed To Know About Chiropractors

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

An absolutely excellent article detailing five top secrets that the public is not supposed to know about chiropractic was published in the December 2008 PH&W Magazine. Sacramento chiropractor, Dr. Jeri Anderson recently came across a copy of this article on the web: “I couldn’t have said it better, the author of this article is right on target. Most people have no idea of the truths uncovered on this excellent piece by PH&W Magazine. Hats off to them for doing their research and telling the truth!”

Here are the Top Secret 5 Things You’re Not Supposed To Know About Chiropractors :

  1. Chiropractic education is equal to medical education, and might be better in some areas.
  2. Chiropractors primary care doctors that do more than crunch backs and necks.
  3. Chiropractic is safe.
  4. Chiropractors took the AMA to court twice, and won.
  5. Medical doctors and chiropractors are working together

What the public rarely hears is how many lives are saved by chiropractors every year. Media covers sensational stories that often are rare events or truths half told. After all, people more likely to watch a house burning down versus a house being built. The truth is that day in and day out chiropractors identify health problems in their patients that at the very least are robbing them of the quality of their lives, and at the very worst have the potential to kill them.

Sacramento chiropractor, Dr. Jeri Anderson of Capitol Chiropractic relates: “ After performing routine examinations, I have sent some of my patients to hospital emergency rooms for aortic aneurysms, brain tumors, blood clots and many other immediate life threatening conditions. I have also uncovered many different types of cancers when caring for my patients and have assisted them in gaining early diagnosis and treatment for those serious conditions thereby improving their likelihood of survival. ”

The Sacramento chiropractor continues, “Chiropractic care has the potential to allow a body to function optimally. I often wonder after uncovering serious health problems in my patients, if chiropractic care years before would have eliminated these problems in the first place. I know that as a Sacramento chiropractor, my life is dedicated to improving the lives of others and preventing dis-ease.”

Finally, with respect to chiropractic education vs. medical education, here is an astonishing fact: In a basic test designed by orthopedic residency professors to test the knowledge of medical residents, 82% of medical school graduates failed the examination. Four years later the test was simplified and, once again, 78% of the examinees failed to demonstrate basic competency in musculoskeletal medicine. When this test was given to final quarter chiropractic students 70% of them passed the same exam!

After reviewing this information, you must ask yourself: Who do you wish to see for your spinal health?

Chiropractic Care More Effective For Neck Pain and Lower Back Pain

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Our awesome friends at chiro.org  posted the fantastic results from a new report demonstrating that chiropractic care is more effective for neck pain and lower back pain that conventional medical modalities. This is great news for our Sacramento and Rancho Cordova area chiropractic patients!

A report, prepared for the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress by the esteemed medical authors Niteesh Choudhry, MD, PHD (Harvard Medical School) and Arnold Milstein, MD, MPH (Mercer health and Benefits), produced these conclusions from the Executive Summary:

Chiropractic care is more effective than other modalities for treating low back and neck pain

Total cost of care per year:

1. For low back pain, chiropractic physician care increases total annual per patient spending by $75 compared to medical physician care

2. For neck pain, chiropractic physician care reduces total annual per patient spending by $302 compared to medical physician care.

Cost-effectiveness:

When considering effectiveness and cost together, chiropractic physician care for low back and neck pain is highly cost-effective, represents a good value in comparison to medical physician care and to widely accepted cost-effectiveness thresholds. Because we were unable to incorporate savings in drug spending commonly associated with US chiropractic care, our estimate of its comparative cost-effectiveness is likely to be understated.

They go on to state: Our findings in combination with existing US studies published in peer-reviewed scientific journals suggest that chiropractic care for the treatment of low back and neck pain is likely to achieve equal or better health outcomes at a cost that compares very favorably to most therapies that are routinely covered in US health benefit plans. As a result, the addition of chiropractic coverage for the treatment of low back and neck pain at prices typically payable in US employer-sponsored health benefit plans will likely increase value-for-dollar by improving clinical outcomes and either reducing total spending (neck pain) or increasing total spending (low back pain) by a smaller percentage than clinical outcomes improve.

Do you know someone looking for a Sacramento or Rancho Cordova chiropractor? Share this news with them! You may go to the chiro.org website for links to the full text of this report.

How To Tell If Back Pain Is From A Disc

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Often patients are concerned about whether their back pain symptoms are caused by a spinal disc injury. While this article is not intended to diagnose your back pain or provide treatment advise, we can offer a few clues to ask your chiropractor about. Keeping Score

Friday, April 9th, 2010

What would happen if you went to a Sacramento King’s game and nobody bothered to keep score? You would probably initially enjoy watching the game of basketball and the pure athleticism, but you would soon get bored. Without keeping score it becomes a matter of watching players run up and down the court without any of your emotions behind it.

Going through life without keeping score is kind of the same way. We get bored and off track. We wander without meaningfully moving forward and we don’t experience as much joy.

How do you keep score? Well, like most things in life, the easier you make it the more likely you are to routinely get it done. At Capitol Chiropractic, we make it simple for you to keep score of the things that matter to you. We have yearly planning calendars available for you every day in our office. These calendars display the entire year on one page.

Now, here’s how we do it: Let’s say that you want to lose 20 pounds. Each day that you eat correctly you make a check mark on the calendar that day. Perhaps you also want to form the habit of regular exercise. Mark off each day on another calendar that you exercise. (We print lots of calendars, so don’t be shy. Take what you need!)

Success builds upon success. Each time you mark your good habits off on the calendar it feels good. It also motivates you to keep doing the right things by keeping score. Perhaps it’s a cold morning and you don’t want to get up an exercise. Oh wait, now you’re lying there thinking about that ugly blank space on the scorecard. Bet you get your fanny out of bed easier than if you didn’t keep score!

Now put the beautiful scorecard up somewhere that you can admire it each day and you will further reinforce your good habits.

Before you know it, you will have lost the weight and formed the habit of exercising or whatever you goal may be!
