Seniors: Can Chronic Pain Cause Falls?
An interesting study in the November 25, 2009 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association has linked chronic pain to an increased risk of falls in seniors. Chronic pain is common in older adults, occuring in as many as 2 out of 3 seniors. It may be more hazardous than previously thought as it contributes to an increased risk of falls in persons over 70 years of age. The study participants who had pain in 2 or more joints had a 50% greater risk of falling. This is a significant finding, as serious falls in seiniors can shorten lifespan, render seniors unable to live in their own homes, ruin remaining quality of life and/or result in death.
One of the greatest benefits of chiropractic for seniors is reducing the risk of falls. While chiropractic care for seniors can improve balance through correcting neurologic dysfunction, perhaps part of the benefit of fall prevention is through chiropractic eliminating chronic pain in seniors. What an awesome finding! For more on the study and chiropractic here is a great link.
